Fine Lines and Wrinkles - Their Most Common Causes and Methods to Try to Prevent Them

The most common causes of fine lines and wrinkles are the natural aging process, sun damage, your actions and attitudes, and gravity. Fortunately in this day and age we do have products available to at least diminish fine lines and wrinkles. For now let’s take a look at the main causes and some general steps you can take to try to prevent them in the first place. I’ll review products available to deal with fine lines and wrinkles in later posts.

Diet and exercise are the best combatants for the natural aging process. A diet with healthy doses of vitamins A, B, C, and E will increase the chances of slowing the aging process of our skin. Quenching your thirst with water instead of caffeine products will keep you hydrated and your skin moisture more balanced. Rest and exercise will help aleviate stress and result in a relaxed and peaceful facial expression.

Prolonged sun exposure dries out your skin and causes loss of collagen fibres and elastin. This results in thinner skin that sags and creates folds in the skin. The use of sunscreen is the most frequent recommendation other than remaining indoors most of the time to prevent the effects of sun damage to the skin. Additionally, wearing a hat or sun visor to shade facial skin and clothing made of light weight, light colored fabrics will help protect your skin in the warm/hot seasons and climates.

Why did I list attitudes and actions? Because whatever attitude you have the majority of the time determines whether your most frequent facial expressions are smiling, frowning, scowling, or peaceful. Over a period of time your expression will setup, in a sense, with fine lines and wrinkles in certain places depending on your dominant attitudes. Hasn’t your Mother told you your face will freeze that way if you look like that for a long time when you were angry or pouting? I’m including actions because you may have life situations that require concentration frequently and can result in vertical lines just above the bridge of your nose. Address your outlook on life in general and you’ll likely succeed in at least having lines that smile.

There isn’t a whole lot we can do about gravity and the role it plays in creating lines and wrinkles other than maybe moving to the moon or alternating between living upside down and right side up. Maybe sometime in the future we can take long vacations on the moon.

For most of my life I can say I’ve consumed a lot of vitamin rich vegetables and fruits. Exercise for me has to be something that is incorporated into the actions of my daily living. I don’t spend prolonged amounts of time out in the hot sun, but I do enjoy time outdoors when the weather is pleasant and bearable.

Obviously I haven’t been to the moon for even a small amount of time. Neither have I devised an acceptable and understandable explanation for those that would question my sanity if I made a habit of standing on my head. So, I suppose gravity will have its way with me eventually.

I do try to keep my attitude in check and maintain an optimistic outlook and a forgiving, loving attitude towards others. Laughter is my favorite medicine and it’s one to which I am addicted without an ounce of guilt.

Are you practicing these or other methods of prevention to take care of your skin and do what you can to prevent lines and wrinkles? What are your methods and what results have you experienced so far?  Are you wishing you had a product that would give you immediate as well as long term results on the lines and wrinkles you already have?
